Mrs. Spark was born on February 1st, 1918 as Muriel Sarah Camberg. She attended the James Gillespe’s School for Girls where it is believed that she received the inspiration for her most book, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. The Poetry Society contracted her as a secretary in 1947 where she had the job of “editing Poetry Review”, much like the heroin in her novel Loitering with Intent. Her conversion to Catholicism, in 1954, allowed her to “see human existence as a whole, as a novelist needs to do” which influenced the religious aspects of her novels. In 1962, Spark’s most long lasting and acclaimed novel, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, was published and even made its star premier on The New Yorker. The American Academy of Arts and Letters elected Mrs. Spark “an honorary member” in 1978. Her last two novels, Aiding and Abetting and The Finishing School, were published in 2000 and 2004, respectively, before her death in 2006.
